Czech Sokol Organization

Sokol is an organization open to everyone who believes in its values: sports, citizenship, community, personality, and kindness. Its program includes interconnected sports, physical, cultural, and social activities, which take place in gymnastic units. Sokol strives for the overall development of a person's character, guiding its members towards fairness, integrity, activity, independence, and the ability to help others. This philosophy is based on the legacy of Miroslav Tyrš and Jindřich Fügner.

It is also interesting that Sokol has more than 160,000 members in over 1,000 towns and cities across the Czech Republic. Nearly half of its members are under 18 years old, highlighting its strong focus on youth development.

Sokol was founded in 1862 by Miroslav Tyrš and Jindřich Fügner in Prague as a physical education organization aimed at strengthening not only physical fitness but also national awareness and moral values.

The movement played a key role in Czech history, especially during the National Revival and the First Republic. During both World Wars, Sokol was suppressed and banned by both the Nazis and the Communist regime. After 1989, the movement was restored and continues its tradition of promoting active citizenship, a healthy lifestyle, and community life.

Sokol gatherings, known as “slets”, where members perform mass gymnastics exercises, have become a symbol of Czech identity and unity.
